In 2017, the application for World Heritage Site status for the « City of Carcassonne and its Mountain Castle Sentinels » (Aguilar, Lastours, Montségur, Puilaurens, Peyrepertuse, Quéribus and Termes) was submitted for consideration by UNESCO. But it is a long process.
The exceptional value of the castles as a distinct group lies in their common history; they are all fine examples of royal military defensive architecture, designed to control the frontier between France and Aragon as well as the territory conquered by the French crown during the Albigensian Crusade in the thirteenth century.

UNESCO’s World Heritage list includes 1073 items in 167 different countries. Of these, in 2017, 43 were French.
